Poverty eradication tops UN forum

Jul 8, 2014

An article written by More Matshediso and published by SAnews.gov.za says South Africa is set to join other UN member countries to thrash out long-term measures to beat poverty and widespread inequality. Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini will be among the panelists sitting in the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York on 8 July 2014.

The minister is expected to make a presentation on long-term solutions to end the cycle of poverty and inequality. Her presentation will be made during a Ministerial Dialogue that will provide a platform for other panellists, lead discussants and the audience to exchange views regarding the topic.

This year’s theme for the forum, which commenced on 30 June, is ‘Achieving the Millennium Development Goals and charting the way for an ambitious post-2015 development agenda, including the Sustainable Development Goals’.

Sustainable development and its three dimensions – economic, social and environmental – will be at the heart of the post-2015 development agenda.

Created at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), held in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012, the forum has given governments, the UN and other major groups of civil society a chance to follow-up on the implementation of sustainable development.

It has also been a means to provide political leadership, guidance and recommendations for sustainable development.

The forum is held under the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) umbrella and concludes on 9 July 2014. – SAnews.gov.za
