Xylem Water Solutions South Africa, the South African division of the global industry leader Xylem Inc, has announced a relationship with the community development non-profit charity (NPC) Afrika Tikkun and its sustainability arm, Afrika Tikkun Services.

The relationship kicks off with Xylem Water Solutions South Africa investing an enterprise development grant of R275 000 in Afrika Tikkun Services and a Socio-Economic Development grant of R110 000 with Afrika Tikkun.

“Investing in communities and skills development is a top priority for us as a company,” says Xylem Water Solutions’ Regional Marketing & Communications Manager – Middle East and Africa, Heinrich Louw. “Afrika Tikkun and Afrika Tikkun Services proved to be the ideal match for us as both of Xylem’s earmarked priorities are met through our relationship with these two interconnected entities.”

Xylem Water Solutions South Africa seeks out communities in need of assistance as part of its ongoing commitment to better the lives of people across South Africa. “This is an extension of the work done globally through Xylem Watermark; Xylem Inc.’s social development platform. The relationship with Afrika Tikkun allows us to do so in a way we know will be sustainable and superbly managed;” Louw adds.

Another marked interest of the company is to invest in skills development and to assist in the training of youth with the view of bringing young workers into the area of its operations, creating awareness of job opportunities that exist within the water industry. The Xylem enterprise development grant will go towards training of young adults that are about to enter the job market.

Afrika Tikkun is an NPC that works toward a future where today’s children and youth are tomorrow’s productive citizens. The team at Afrika Tikkun accomplishes this by adopting a cradle-to-career model which invests in the development of disadvantaged children from early infancy through young adulthood and into the world of work. The NPC has a twenty year history of excellence in the communities in which it works.

Errol Pillay, Chief Executive Officer of Afrika Tikkun Services, says “The enterprise Ddvelopment grant received from Xylem Water Solutions South Africa will see us working in partnership to develop specific career readiness training modules targeted at youth in townships. But most crucially, we will be preparing these youth for learnership and career opportunities in the engineering sector”.

Afrika Tikkun Services (Pty) Ltd is a for-profit social enterprise, established and driven by the need to maintain the relevance of the Afrika Tikkun brand in the face of global socio-economic change. The company functions to enhance the social development impact of Afrika Tikkun NPC through skills and enterprise development platforms – a mechanism which additionally enables it as the sustainability arm of the NPC. The primary objective of the company is to align with corporate partners as their supplier of choice for placement of skilled youth from under resourced communities.

The official handover of these funds and announcement of upcoming activities between Xylem Water Solutions, Afrika Tikkun and Afrika Tikkun Services took during South African Water Week (16 – 22 March) at its World Water Day celebrations on site at Afrika Tikkun’s Wings of Life Community Centre in Diepsloot, Johannesburg.
