MTN South Africa has won the Green and Most Empowered Enterprise awards at the inaugural SA Premier Business Awards, hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Johannesburg.

The awards recognise South African companies that invest in both human and technical resources in various projects, as well as stimulate local job creation and broader participation in the economy.

The DTI says that the efforts of the finalists place the country and the continent in a competitive and beneficial position, particularly with regard to technological innovation, trade and investment.

“We are proud to be recognised for the commitment we have shown in our programmes involving environmental sustainability and for our compliance to the BBBEE Act. MTN works tirelessly to ensure that it is a responsible corporate citizen and these awards are testament to that,” says Themba Nyathi, chief human resources officer at MTN South Africa.

The Green award is targeted at an organisation which exemplifies and upholds environmental standards in their production and operational processes.

“Over the years, MTN has invested significantly in ensuring the environmental sustainability of its operations.
“This includes the installation of a two megawatt, methane-driven tri-generation plant, the first of its kind in Africa, at our headquarters in Fairlands, and ensuring that all our business data centres are built and our business practices undertaken according to environmentally-friendly practices,” says Nyathi.

The Most Empowered Enterprise award aims to encourage and promote compliance to BBBEE. The organisation winning the award should demonstrate its performance with elements of good practice that includes ownership, skills development, enterprise development and socio-economic development.

“We are actively involved in the empowerment of small businesses through a number of initiatives and good codes of business practice. The development of our people also lies close to our hearts and we have consistently been featured as one of the best companies to work for in South Africa,” concludes Nyathi.
