Sustainable innovation in African construction

May 26, 2014

With many African countries pushing for a higher penetration of physical infrastructure, stakeholders from across the globe are getting ready to increase their presence on the continent. However, even though Africa can be considered a hotspot for development and investment, it is also considered a difficult market that leaves stakeholders of the built environment with a series of challenges which are mainly of strategic and technical nature.

On a strategic level, members of the construction industry and project owners have to solve issues around the funding of projects and ensure that projects are delivered on time and on budget. Furthermore, with growing regional integration, cross-border projects are becoming more common, even though they add significantly to the complexity of a project.

On a technical level, the construction industry has to adhere to certain industry standards to ensure safe and sustainable development. Building materials play a major role in this. With concrete being the most common building material, most of research and development centres around it, especially with regards to the production and the use of this material. Sustainable innovation within the cement and concrete sector is, therefore, key for the development of the African continent.

To drive infrastructure development on the African continent, strategic and technical development need to go hand in hand; collaboration between all stakeholders and across countries is key. The African Construction and Totally Concrete Expos offer a Pan-African education and networking platform for the construction industry.

Over three days, the events bring together over 6000 construction experts from across the continent to facilitate an interactive exchange of knowledge and to advance collaboration. The event hosts a conference that addresses strategic issues such as construction of infrastructure projects and also discusses the latest developments and technologies associated with the cement and concrete industry. An interactive exhibition showcases the latest products and solutions that help deliver projects on time and on budget.

A free-to-attend workshop programme provides educational content and encourages a change towards a more sustainable approach to construction.
